City sidewalks were made for walking
Walking at a leisurely pace allows you to notice things you can't see from the seat of a car. When walking, you can dawdle along, stopping to gaze and ponder history. You can linger at some new discovery like a gargoyle hidden in the carved stonework of an old building.
HHA develops walking tours with special emphasis on Harrisburg's built environment to tell the city's story. Buildings, past and present, embody hopes and dreams like no other art form. By walking city sidewalks, you can put yourself in the same places as historic figures such as John Harris, II, Simon Cameron and Myra Lloyd Dock. You can experience the impact that the City Beautiful Movement had upon the simple streets of this small but important city. You might even be able to envision a slower pace of life before automobiles.
Our current walking tours under development include:
Literature for other city walking tours created by other groups is available from several places in Harrisburg, including our HHA offices, the city government center on Market Square and local hotels.
The City of Harrisburg
Department of Building and Housing Development
in cooperation with the Department of Parks and Recreation created the city walking tour called Creating a Sense of Place and a Healthy Community. The Broad Street Market and HHA's former Resource Center are mentioned in this tour guide..
