Project Overview PDF Print E-mail
Located in the heart of thriving Midtown and along the Third Street Corridor, the Historic Harrisburg Association finds an immediate need to restore the hundred-year-old bank building into a Cultural Non-Profit Center. Once restoration is completed, the bank building will consist of community space for public and private events, gallery space for local artists to exhibit their work, offices for area non-profits to lease, and community and organizational meeting rooms.

With the recent developments of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College's Midtown Campus, GreenWorks Development's Green Center, relocation of the Federal Court House at Sixth and Maclay Streets, Historic Harrisburg is dedicated to contributing to the fabric and cultural integrity of the surrounding neighborhood.

This project, as proposed, will enable the Historic Harrisburg Association to complete important restoration work that has great functional, economic and architectural significance:

  • The completion of government- required public safety improvements in a thorough and proper manner is a mandatory obligation, made even more relevant and conspicuous because Historic Harrisburg's long-standing reputation as a advocate of proper building maintenance and code compliance.
  • The restoration of the skylight and decorative ceiling elements will transform the Resource Center into a prominent and praiseworthy example of historic preservation – a creative and adaptive re-use of a surplus building that gives inspiration to others.

Once fully restored, the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center will be poised to achieve the following goals:

  • Building rentals, by private citizens and businesses, will increase, generating sufficient income to sustain the entire cost of building operation. A tremendous demand for such facilities is presently unmet.
  • The increased "traffic" generated by private rentals will have a beneficial impact on numerous Historic Harrisburg missions including public education, increased visitation of the surrounding shops and businesses, and a heightened popularity of historic properties and city destination for private entertaining.
  • The potential to develop the Resource Center as a visitors' destination, in conjunction with other historic and retail sites, will likewise increase.
  • Activities of the numerous other community organizations using and sharing the Resource Center will achieve higher potential for success, visitation and income.
  • Historic Harrisburg's own expanding calendar of education and community activities will directly benefit from the achievement of restoration work that is consistent with Historic Harrisburg's well-known standards of design excellence.

All of these potential achievements will lead to Historic Harrisburg's corporate goal of long-term self sufficient as an organization, while allowing the Resource Center to serve as a successful urban gathering space for other non-profit community organizations.

By providing attractive and functional facilities for educational activities, community lectures, historical and fine art exhibitions, civic meetings, and daily drop-in visits, and by serving as a high-profile anchor for the ongoing Third Street economic renaissance, the restored Historic Harrisburg Resource Center will be able to make an even greater contribution to the quality of life and the economic vitality of the Capital Region.
