Harrisburg will join thousands of individuals around the country as part of a nationwide celebration of the 37th annual National Historic Preservation Observance through the month of May 2008.
Historic Harrisburg Association will hold its Annual Meeting and Preservation Awards Ceremony,
during preservation week in May.
The meeting includes:
- The State of the Organization Address
- Community Historic Preservation Awards
- Community Historic Preservation Fund grant announcements
The 2007 annual meeting was a great success with a pre-meeting social at Harrisburg Cemetery and a well-attended annual meeting. The featured speaker was Mark Dollase, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana (FLIP: Fund for Landmark Indiana Properties, www.historiclandmarks.org). Through examples of how Indiana has succeeded in preserving historic areas, he gave us new ideas for how to redevelopment of our troubled historic neighborhoods and inspired us to create a vision for our city's future.
Harrisburg’s architecture, both public and private, creates a spirit of place that identifies it as special and unique. This treasure sets our community apart from every other as it attracts tourists, contributes to the area's stability and livability, and gives residents a sense of connection with their shared heritage.
Preservation Week calls on us to do all we can to recognize, save and enhance the irreplaceable features that give each community its distinctive character. Toward this end, Historic Harrisburg Association has established the Community Historic Preservation Fund as a permanent endowment fund to be used for preserving and restoring historic structures in the City of Harrisburg by giving cash grants for worthy preservation projects. Grants for projects approved for 2008 will be announced during our Annual Meeting and Preservation Awards Ceremony.
Historic Harrisburg Association has worked since 1973 to preserve historically significant neighborhoods and landmarks in the City of Harrisburg. As a grassroots movement, HHA has been successful in its effort to balance historic preservation with the demands of an ever-changing social and economic landscape. Essential to this mission is an increasing understanding of how neighborhoods and their character have been formed by their history and how an appreciation of that history is essential for lasting development.
