Fourth Monday Program “on the road” at Jewish Community Center of Greater Harrisburg

On Monday, June 25, Historic Harrisburg will present a FREE educational program and tour at the Jewish Community Center, highlighting the history of Harrisburg’s Jewish community and the contributions of its leading citizens, emphasizing the legacy of businesswoman and philanthropist Mary Sachs, whose ladies’ clothing shop opened in Downtown Harrisburg in 1918. The program includes a presentation by Dr. Simon Bronner, Penn State Professor
Emeritus of History and the author of more than 20 books including “Greater Harrisburg’s Jewish Community.” The tour will highlight the history, mission and programming of the Jewish Community Center as well as the many leading citizens whose noteworthy contributions are memorialized throughout the center. An informal reception and social period is included.
This event, jointly hosted by the Jewish Community Center and the Historic Harrisburg Association, is sponsored by the Mary Sachs Charitable Trust, which has commissioned Historic Harrisburg to organize a series of activities commemorating the centennial of the opening of the Mary Sachs shop on September 6, 1918. On the anniversary date, September 6, 2018, a new exhibit will open at the Historic Harrisburg Resource Center titled “Harrisburg’s Merchant Heritage: The Retail Legacy of Mary Sachs, Allan Stuart, the Goldsmiths, the Troups and more.”
The June 25th program at the Jewish Community Center begins at 6:00 pm and is open to the public free of charge. The JCC is located at 3301 North Front Street (at Vaughn Street).
